Murals of Industry and Leisure

The ten murals in this series portray the prominent
industries and leisure of Louisville, as well the development of
mail services in the region. The long narrow friezes depict the
historical industries of Louisville. Stock Farming shows farmers
with their various types of livestock. Coal Mining depicts a scene
of miners with stylized light beams representing this important
industry for the growth and development of Kentucky. Ohio River
Traffic highlights river transport, an influential factor in the
development of Southern agriculture and the founding of Louisville.
Agriculture shows farmers reaping the fruits of the field. The two
larger panels, Fox Hunting and Horse Racing, pay homage to Kentucky’s
passion for horses. The four lunettes over the elevators illustrate
various postal delivery methods. The Star Route and Rural Free delivery
portray the early postal delivery system to rural areas. City Collection
and Unloading Railroad Post Office Car portray the delivery system
used in the city.
About the Artist:
Frank Weathers Long was born May 7, 1906 in Knoxville, TN; later
resided in Berea, KY and lived in Albuquerque as of 1992. He studied
art at the Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine
Arts, and Academie Julian, Paris, France.
